"One of the most interesting and most memorable protagonists to appear in years." -K.L. Roberts

"Even better than the first book in the series, and the first one was great." -A reviewer

In The Refugee, Eshel's escaping his homeworld and living among humans created a furor that impacted the entire Alliance. After the Korvali had Eshel abducted and returned to Korvalis, Catherine and Tom embarked on an audacious mission to retrieve him, proving just how far the Corps and Alliance would go to protect him. But such a bold act may have transformed the Korvali into a formidable enemy...

The Operative, the second novel of the Korvali Chronicles trilogy, has Catherine, Eshel, Tom, and Snow facing new adventures... and new dangers. A violent incident on Suna thrusts Catherine into the perilous covert world of biocracking, where stolen genetic patents are bartered among Sunai criminals. A secret project involving Eshel's genetic work shows substantial promise for Catherine and Holloway... but also comes with tremendous risk if discovered by the increasingly suspicious Commander Steele. And despite the best of intentions, romantic connections unexpectedly develop--or rekindle--even when they're fraught with difficulties.

Finally, growing only more powerful living among outsiders, Eshel remains the center of escalating tensions between the Corps, the Alliance, and the Korvali... until something shocking happens that will permanently transform the political landscape for all.

This was the second book of a trilogy about a 4 planet alliance set far in the future. The story is about a refugee from a 5th planet that is reclusive and technologically backward except for a mastery of epigenetics ( genetic engineering ) that puts the Alliance scientists to shame.

The refugee comes to serve on Earth military space ship on the provision ( from his government ) that he doesn't share his advanced knowledge of genetics. That doesn't seem like much of a threat from a technologically lacking planet, but the author pulls some fun surprises in regard to that assumption.

In the first book the protagonist has an interspecies romance with the refugee. In this book that is cooled off, everyone is friends, and the reader gets an interesting description of shipboard life for a groups of friends making you feel like you are almost one of them.

Diet in science fiction and historical fiction/dramatizatins are always interesting as authors always seem to get it wrong. Movies about medieval Europe show people eating potatoes, which Europeans didn't have, and show them eating modern potatoes. Sci-fi authors have had futuristic people faux meats made out of yeast, mold, or mushrooms despite legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits being incredibly efficient agriculturally and built into highly sophisticated cuisines centuries old. In this story the mess hall in the ship serves as the back drop for many conversations. Despite being set so far in the future for the technology to be taken for granted, there seems to be only 3 meals in this cafeteria: chicken & potatoes, spaghetti, and fish & sea vegetables from a world of sentient humanoid amphibians. I'm guessing the author only wrote about 3 choices to convey the sense that shipboard life was monotonous. I will give the author points for not having futuristic humans living off yeast and mushrooms, but still finding ways to have food humans like.

I also liked the human & Sunai interactions in the story. The Sunai are a species of humanoids where the military dominates their culture, but the characters still manage to be friendly, colorful and warm while being short tempered and violent.

The story is very dialogue & relationship drive with several unexpected plot twists to make it into a fun read.

The Operative The Korvali Chronicles Book 2 eBook CA Hartman Reviews

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series! Character development is solid, the different planets very believable and story is interesting enough to follow for three books. I would highly recommend this series!
The story line was a great follow up to the 1st book. I enjoyed visiting the characters again. Personalities are very developed and entertaining. Loving Science Fiction as I do, I hope there is a sequel to this book.
Excellent planet/world building; believable characters from each planet. Good writing as I want to read Book 3, and Right Now!
This book is as good as the previous, the story continues on with greater interesting and dramatic plot lines. Hartman knows how to get her reader engaged with the characters. just when when you expect one thing she reveals a different,
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I ordered the third in the trilogy as soon as I finished. The characters were interesting and of a wide variety. The science was interesting and the romantic aspect was well done in that, while it was an integral part, it didn't overwhelm.
The author has the ability to keep the reader totally involved and feeling like a participant in this adventure. I especially enjoyed the twists and turns the story takes as we try to figure where and how the characters grow and interact with each other. A great read that has me seeking the rest of this story.
The characters and their relationships are being developed beautifully in this 2nd book in the series and my attachment to them is developing in kind. I love the characters! The author has created a very complex plot and I can’t wait to see where she takes it in the 3rd book, which I’ve already purchased.

I hope more readers catch on to this series. It’s worthy of a large and appreciative readership.
