This dictionary is truly unique and focuses only on material that's interesting in medicine. It's the dictionary I wanted to have when I was a med student, to keep me constructively amused between classes. In these pages the reader will find everything from soup–e.g., chicken and primordial, to nuts, e.g., Brazil nuts and walnuts as well as human nuts, like Cat man, tree man, red necks, and blue bloods to mention a few. Syndromes? Hundreds, including seven Michael Jackson syndromes, five vampire syndromes, two Tiger Woods syndromes and of course THE Seinfeld syndrome (not to mention the Seinfeld syncope). Did I remember the David Letterman sign? You betcha. Serial killers? Stacks of them (maybe that's not the right word). Comic book characters? Covered. Heros and heroines; fairy tales, artists and their works; you name it, it's here; Over 10,000 definitions from the pinnacle of man's achievements to the depths of his depravity…all squeezed in for your reading and browsing pleasure

The Doctor Dictionary eBook Joseph C Segen MD

A dictionary is a collection of alphabetically arranged words followed by a short definition. In general, they're compiled by a team of English lit majors and supervised by experts in various fields of interest. And they're boring.

The Doctor's Dictionary shatters that mold. The `heavy lifting' wasn't done by a team, but rather by a single author. That alone would make it unique, but the author is a pathologist who says he's been at medical lexicography for 26 years, so he has "street cred" to write for his intended audience. As if covering medicine's soup-to-nuts wasn't enough of a challenge, Dr Segen, an American who lives in the UK, has written it in British English. And no one could call the material boring: it has all the stuff you WISH you could find in a (medical) dictionary but don't expect to, because the "cool" stuff never is in a "proper" dictionary.

Segen treats us to the unexpected on every page: toxic SHOCK syndrome and toxic SOCK syndrome; the GULF war syndrome and the GOLF war syndrome(s), His and Hers diseases, and all seven Michael Jackson syndromes. He has catalogued an astounding array of medical conditions and signs named after seemingly every food-e.g., watermelon stomach and linguine sign; color-the Red Book, white coat hypertension, blue nevus; major work of art-e.g., Starry Night sign and Mona Lisa smile; and character in mythology and literature-e.g., Othello, Rip van Winkle, and Ulysses to mention but a few. Nor did he give short shrift to the famous-e.g., David Letterman sign, Megan Fox thumb, Albert Einstein syndrome, the infamous-e.g., Dahmer, Shipman, Fish, and Bundy and the nut cases-e.g., Cat man, Jung, and Wakefield who have walked among us.

The material Segen chose to include in The Doctor's Dictionary often lent itself to an emotional treatment. His outrage at man's inhumanity to man-e.g., Holodomor, Nanjing, Somalia factor, chagrin at US foreign policy-e.g., Kyoto policy, Mexico City policy, waterboarding, and sense of whimsy-e.g., execute, Masturbate-a-thon, and cruise-associated diarrhoeal disorder-which he defines as "Big boat bouts of bowel-bound bowels" percolate through the pages. For the latter, Segen shares several YouTube links that he felt illustrated the definition-e.g., Maximum absorbancy garment and Postal worker syndrome. they are gems not to be missed.

While the book is written for professionals, in particular medical and professional students, at $10, this book is too cheap and too fascinating to let the doctors have all the fun

The Doctor Dictionary eBook Joseph C Segen MD Reviews

I was expecting something like the Dorland's Illustrated or better, it turned out to be very different. Different is great when it delivers...."More than often, I could not find what I was looking for in this type of a dictionary”...I am sure it will make it to one of my electronic shelves in antiquity.
