I usually consider a book well worth it if I can take away 1 or 2 thoughtful ideas. What a treat it then is for those ideas to make actual positive change in my profession and teaching.

This book is an enormous gift to the world of violin playing and teaching. I teach viola for a living, and ordered this book on the recommendation of a friend.

I've struggled with pain on and off for many years, and tried Alexander, as well as Feldenkreis technique. I found them both to be extremely noble philosophies, and rich worlds to investigate. I also found them too deep of a well at times, and would sometimes wish for more direct information that could address very specific problems related to playing and teaching violin/viola.

After reading only 15 pages, I had already found some answers which have altered the way I play and teach - in profound ways. Ms. Johnson has identified many habits in the way string players teach - many phrases, dutifully passed down through the generations, which are not only vague and unhelpful - but quite harmful.

I recommend this book extremely highly. It is not too brainy, and extremely practical. The research and opinions are backed up by the indisputable realities of human physiology. The binding itself (in rings) is a brilliant idea, and designed for real use in lessons and practicing.

Thanks for this book! With much appreciation,

David Rose

What Every Violinist Needs To Know About the Body/G7409 Jennifer Johnson 9781579997342 Books Reviews

This book takes the approach of the Alexander Technique to solve pain problems that supposedly result from "improperly" playing the violin. I am a cellist that suffered from 2 years of pain. I discovered that a physical approach to solving this type of pain does not work. Instead, I suggest any would be reader look up a doctor named John Sarno and his books for a permanent fix to pain and string playing.
This book has helped me get rid of a years old shoulder issue and has really helped my teaching- in many different ways. It is well written, easy to follow and absolutely fascinating!
MARVELOUS BOOK - ALSO GREAT FOR STUDENTS !!!!!!
I have only read the first chapter, but have already learned so much! This book is a great exploration of anatomy and how it relates to violin playing-something that is severely lacking in violin education. Every violinist should read this book!
I was expecting more of a pedagogical approach, but this is actually the body mapping approach used by the Conables (Alexander teachers.) It has a lot of interesting things for you to try to improve your use when you play violin. If you have Alexander experience you will understand even more how it relates to that technique and the terminology, but Johnson does a great job of keeping it user-friendly by not getting too technical. For anyone who is struggling with pain or just discomfort when playing, I highly recommend this book so that you have some ways to experiment to change your use for the better. In addition, I have been using it as a teacher with my students and it really helps there too.
The information presented in this book is something that ALL string players (and any musicians for that matter) should be familiar with. Even if you aren't currently experiencing any problems in your playing, after reading this it's almost a guarantee that your playing will improve. In regards to pedagogy, the information and exercises presented in this book is priceless---from common pedagogical "misconceptions" to common student "body mismappings," this book has it all. In the preface, the author encourages that this book be treated like a textbook/workbook; in order to experience everything it has to offer, it must be treated as such. Once you get through, however, I can say from experience that it is worth it to treat it as you would a textbook/workbook. In other words, the more that you put into absorbing and -applying- the information, the more YOU will benefit.

For years I have suffered from tension-related setbacks in my playing, but thanks to this book I am now able to play "freely" and put the music back as my primary focus. I can now practice for hours without feeling sore, and for the first time I feel more than confident in my own pedagogy, and especially confident in starting somebody off on a violin/viola (the information in this book translates very smoothly between the two instruments). This book truly is "the solution" you have been looking for in solving the problems and limitations of your playing. Having experienced the amount of progress and change in the amount of time that I have, I would go as far as to say that this book can be life-changing. Recommended without hesitation! If you are looking for that "extra edge" in your playing, this book undoubtedly will help you discover it.
Essential body mechanics for violinists. Debunks many amateur views of position and technique.
